Cover Art

I absolutely love cover art. Good and bad. The bad is just bad and while taste is subjective, sometimes a cover is just B.A.D. I think we all can admit that.

I've been working on photo manipulation for a few months now and have a lot of respect for really good cover artists. My hope is to one day sit amongst that elite and talented crowd.

Today, I'd like to share a few of my favorite covers. Next year my taste may be totally different, but just now I do notice a common thread in my preferences. Can a girl help where her eye is drawn?

First up: Nalini Singh's ARCHANGEL'S CONSORT

Actually, I'm drawn to this cover for a number of reasons. First, I adore angels. The wings, the depth in the color of the feathers, are absolutely stunning. A strong female always catches my eye. I love bad ass heroines. I like the font selection as well. Not overdone, but just enough interest to stand out.

FALLING UNDER by Gwen Hayes

Absolutely one of my all time favorites. The color is stunning. I'm a huge fan of black and red. The contrast between the two really makes this cover pop. This beautiful girl is lying on a bed of black roses. The implications of that alone makes me want to open this book and read. The font is understated, instead allowing us to focus on the expression on the model's face. Fantastic cover!

Lauren Kate's FALLEN

While this heroine may not be the picture of strength, she is someone I feel I can relate to. Her profile is breathtaking. The lack of color in this cover, with its shades of grey, appeal to my darker side. A touch of the mysterious seems evident here.

THE GIRL IN THE STEEL CORSET by Kady Cross

Red, red, red, and lots of it. I want this dress! The word Steampunk doesn't even need to be on this cover. I get it in the background and even in the watch she holds in her hand. She appears strong, yet vulnerable. And once again, my focus is pulled to the expression on her face. I want to know more!

These are just a few of my favorites. Some I haven't even had the chance to read yet, but it's almost enough just to have these covers on my bookshelf.

What type of covers are you drawn to and why? Tell me one of your favorites.

  1. Cool covers! Covers have improved so much over the past few years. I generally only buy ebooks now, but sometimes the covers are so awesome, I have to buy them in paperback or hardcover for my bookshelf.
I love some of the paranormal YAs coming out, and some of the classic Sci Fi covers (like Germline) always draw me in for some reason. And then there's Moning's last book cover of course that could be hung on a wall... so many covers!

  2. If I had a home office I think I'd frame certain covers. I would make an entire theme out of it. Moning's may be front and center. Awesome cover! Just checked out Germline. Very, very cool.

  3. Elle,

My first choice is Fallen. I love the dark tones which suggest so much and the woman's pose. Also thought provoking.

  4. Hi Casey! Fallen is a stunner. I'd love to have a cover like that! If memory serves me correctly, BLACK RIBBON AFFAIR has dark tones as well. I'm always drawn to those type of covers.
